HOW TO BUILD A POND. . .

Your Aquatic Plant & Pond Supply Source

Flexible pond liners are a versatile and economical way to build a water garden. Liners provide the freedom to create a durable, long lasting water garden of any size or shape desired. Liners are made of many different materials and come in a variety of thickness. One of the most durable and easily used is PondGard EPDM by Firestone.

Step One- Find a sunny location with at least five hours of direct sunlight if lilies are desired. With a length of hose lay out your pond design. Dig to the desired depth, 18-24" for plants and three feet for fish. A ledge can be carved out for bog plants, 10-12" wide by 6-12" deep. Be sure the pond edge is level or the pond will look unnatural, even by half an inch. Remove all protruding rocks and roots. To remove any irregularities line the hole with one inch of builders sand.

Step Two- Unfold the pond liner and place it loosely over the hole. Place it across the hole so it overlaps evenly on all sides. Hold the liner in place by putting bricks or stones on the edges. The pool can be filled with your garden hose. Well water is sufficient and is preferred to city water.

Step Three- As the pool fills with water the liner will conform to the shape of the pond. Wrinkles should be smoothed out and folded flat. When walking on the liner go barefoot or wear soft soled shoes to avoid accidental punctures. It may be necessary to slow or stop the water to make larger folds out of many small wrinkles. Fill the pond slightly below the top edge. It will now be apparent if the top edge is level. If not soil can be added or taken away to bring the level to within a quarter of an inch.

Step Four- Anchor the edge of the liner. A more permanent and stable coping can be made by doing the following: Cut and lay a 12" wide strip of lath or chicken wire around the edge of the pond. Add two- four inches of mortar on top and set the desired stones or pavers in place. Put additional mortar between the joints of the stones. When partially dry, about one to three hours later, excess mortar can be brushed away with a stiff brush. Trim the outside edge of the liner slightly above or at the coping level. This will prevent water from entering the pond from surrounding areas. Now the completed pond should be drained and refilled to clean out all construction debris.

Note: If using city water be sure to put dechlorinator in before adding fish and plants.
